Settlement Confidentiality And Fees: Texas State Court Judge Orders Hurricane Ike Fees Under Wraps

Fees Will Be Disclosed in a Future Hearing.

Well, here is one with a twist, counterintuitive to courts being public and access friendly—whether settlements or attorney’s fees requests are involved (which generally are not kept under wraps).

Galveston County 212th District Courty Judge Susan Criss has ordered that attorney’s fees to be paid in a $189 million Hurricane Ike settlement are to remain under wraps for the time being, reports John Suayan in a September 30, 2010 post in the Galveston Bureau.

The fees are to be disclosed at a future hearing, but a political storm has broken out because State Rep. Larry Taylor believes that the fees should not be confidential and opposes the fee requests based on his view that the money should go toward home repairs.

I guess we learn later about the attorney’s fees awarded as part of the ultimate settlement.
