Includes Fees on Related Suit filed by Winslow’s Former Assistant Coach.
As reported by Cheri Carlson and Jean Cowden Moore in an August 14, 2010 posted article on vcstar.com (Ventura County Star), VCCCD has spent the sums referenced in our “In the News” title in its probe of Greg Winslow, former Ventura College basketball coach who was eventually put on unpaid leave and charged by the District Attorney’s Office with depositing basketball program donations and gym rental payments into his personal bank account as well as allowing out-of-state players to pay in-state tuition rates.
Dr. James M. Meznek, VCCCD’s Chancellor, is quoted as saying that the expenses are due to the fact Mr. Winslow “really lawyered up.” Most of these expenses have been paid from the general fund.
The criminal trial is expected to start in September of this year, with Mr. Winslow pleading not guilty to all charges and with his criminal attorney questioning the justification for all the expenses paid to date.
The $800,000 expenditure includes costs the VCCCD has spent on a wrongful termination suit filed by Jeff Theiler, Mr. Winslow’s former assistant coach.
In a subsequent statement posted on vcstar.com on August 23, 2010, Dr. Meznek has defended the expenditures as necessary “to protect the integrity of our colleges.”
