Nonprofit Group Files Complaint With Federal Election Commission.
Censured Rep. Charles Rangel (N.Y.) apparently has drawn the ire of a nonprofit group, the National Legal and Policy Center, which has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission. The NLPC alleges that Rep. Rangel, who denies wrongdoing, used moneys from his National Leadership PAC to fund his legal defense during the House ethics investigation leading to his censure last week. The center said Rep. Rangel paid $293,000 to his principal defense attorneys from the PAC, and possibly portions of another $100,000 paid to another firm for defense in the case. So reports the AP in a December 7, 2010 post at latimes.com.
Note: The NLPC is headed by president Peter Flaherty and chairman Ken Boehm. Among other things, each served in the past as chairman of the lobbying group “Citizens for Reagan.”
