MGA and Its Former Law Firm O’Melveny & Myers Have Reached Tentative Settlement.
In the fallout from the MGA-Mattel battle, MGA Entertainment’s former counsel O’Melveny & Myers had sued MGA to collect $10.2 million in disputed billings for O’Melveny’s former role in the Mattel litigation (representing MGA from 2007 to 2007). MGA had launched a malpractice countersuit against O’Melveny. O’Melveny had moved for discovery sanctions against MGA in the suit pending before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth White. Judge White was leaning toward sanctioning MGA, and MGA dropped the malpractice claims on August 26, 2011 (soon after O’Melveny moved for sanctions, apparently trying to moot the sanctions request).
Now, the parties recently indicated to Judge White that they had reached a tentative settlement and needed more time to iron out the details, a request obliged by Judge White in setting a November 7 further status conference.
More details can be found in Amanda Bronstad’s October 12, 2011 post at The National Law Journal website.
