Ex-Santa Rosa Police Captain Jamie Mitchel Hit With Fee Exposure In His Wrongful Termination Federal Lawsuit.
As reported by Lori A. Carter in her article “Judge rules against ex-Santa Rose police captain” in a May 1, 2010 post on The Press Democrat, California Northern District U.S. District Judge Susan Illston has dismissed a federal wrongful termination action brought by ex-Santa Rosa police captain Jamie Mitchel against Santa Rosa. U.S. District Judge Illston has ordered that Mr. Mitchel pay attorney’s fees to Santa Rosa, in an amount to be determined at a scheduled May 14, 2010 hearing. Santa Rose Attorney Caroline Fowler estimated the legal fees amount for the case to be $75,000 to $100,000, even though all the wranglings resulting from the termination have cost the city more than $840,000.

Petamula Has Spent and Is Still Spending Fees in Rent Control Dispute Litigation.
Philip Riley (with the Argus-Courier staff), in an April 30, 2010 post on The Press Democrat, has reported on fees spent by Petaluma in litigation involving the Sandalwood mobile home park. The City has spent almost $80,000 in legal fees in the past 13 months battling the mobile home park owner (Bill Feeney) over Petaluma’s rent control ordinance, which puts restrictions on certain rent increases. One of the problems here is that Mr. Feeney may have had no choice but to litigate against City, because there is no mediation process with the City. (BLOG OBSERVATION—With dwindling municipal resources, maybe cities ought to institute a mediation process? We don’t like to be too political in our views on this website, but co-contributors Marc and Mike usually promote mediation in the civil litigation they encounter.)
